This year’s edition of the “Evolution of Life” series depicts the terror bird, also known as Phorusrhacidae. These prehistoric, flightless birds, reaching up to 3 meters in height, were among the top predators of the Neogene and Paleogene periods. Their long legs and hook-shaped beaks indicate swift predators, capable of running at speeds up to 50 km/h across the open landscapes of South America.
Their extinction was likely facilitated by the formation of the land bridge between North and South America, which allowed the migration of competing predators. Combined with climate changes, this probably led to the disappearance of the terror birds.
