The early works of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) consisted of mostly still-lifes and depictions of peasant laborers. In 1886, he moved to Paris, where he endeavored to investigate the possibilities of color through a large series of flower still-lifes. His 1887 painting Vase With Cornflowers And Poppies is regarded by many art critics as the most brilliant and exuberant of the series. The painting features a bouquet of bright red poppies, intensely blue cornflowers, and creamy white marguerites in a narrow vase that has been placed on a shimmering, but loosely defined surface against a loosely painted blue background. Not only does the composition vibrate with luxurious color, but it also captures the moment of summer at which these flowers would have been in bloom.
