In Egyptian mythology, the Dragon is known as “Apep,” and is often referred to as the “Lord of Chaos.” Apep is depicted as a massive serpent that stretches across the sky and tries to swallow the sun each day. Though generally believed to be the enemy of order and the forces of good, the Dragon was also a symbol of transformation and rebirth, with the power to transform and transcend. Often depicted biting its own tail, the Egyptian Dragon also represents the ideas of perpetuity immortality, repetition, and cycles.
The incredible dragon design depicts the iconic Egyptian Dragon in a folded, almost bat-like, pose! The beast’s family pedigree is inscribed around the rim in dramatic text that reads, “EGYPTIAN DRAGON” and “DRAGONS OF THE WORLD.” In addition to the design of a fearsome-looking dragon, another truly unique aspect of this piece is its stunning ultra-high relief (UHR) detail combined with a technologically advanced minting technique which produced a “cupped” shape that’s deeply convex on one side and concave on the other.
Each coin available here has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) in perfect Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70UC) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has certified that these proofs are First Day of Issue (FDI) coins, meaning they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date. Each will come sonically sealed in an acrylic holder and encapsulated with a special black display core and a “Dragons of the World” label. These coins will also come beautifully housed in a deluxe presentation case with an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity, a story card on the Egyptian Dragon, and a dragon booklet.
This legal-tender $2 coin was released on behalf of Fiji, an island nation in the South Pacific that’s made up of more than 300 islands and was struck in a full ounce of 99.9% pure silver. This series offers a look at depictions of dragons—and their folklore—from four different continents and five different countries. Other releases include dragons from Wales (1st release), China, India, and the Mayan/Aztec empires of Central America. A final coin showcasing each beast will complete the series.
