Legend
The tale of Arthur Pendragon supposedly took place in the 5th or 6th centuries. Part myth, part history, and all romantic adventure, the stories have thrilled generations down through the centuries in books, films, comics—and now on coins. Struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, each silver dollar-sized $5 coin in this set touches on one of the familiar themes from the Legend of King Arthur:
KING ARTHUR – Known as Arthur Pendragon, King Arthur united Britain and led his knights in battle against Saxon invaders in the early sixth century. He also sent many of his knights on a quest to seek the Holy Grail, the sacred cup from which Jesus drank from at the Last Supper.
KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE – King Arthur’s famous round table was symbolic of fairness and equality as since there was no head of the table, no one who were seated there could claim precedence over another, thus preventing quarrels among his knights, none of whom would accept a lower place than the others.
CAMELOT – A mythical castled city where King Arthur held court, Camelot was the center of the Kingdom of Logres and in Arthurian legend would become the location of the round table that held 150 knights. Scholars believe Camelot may have existed at Caerleon in South Wales or Cadbury Castle in England.
EXCALIBUR – After King Arthur’s father died many claimed to be the heir to the throne. Merlin set a sword—Excalibur—in a stone with words inscribed to the effect that whoever could remove the sword was the rightful king. Other legends say the sword was bestowed to Arthur by the Lady in the Lake.
Selective Silver & Gold Plating
