2022 marked the fifth year that the prestigious South African Mint has been striking Silver Krugerrands. It also marked the first year in the Mint’s second Big 5 series of coins dedicated to Africa’s most dangerous wild animals. To pay tribute to both series, the South African Mint created an amalgam of sorts with this special, limited-edition Silver Krugerrand that features a unique Big 5 privy mark.
Just 1,000 of these coins have been struck—among the lowest-mintage silver Krugerrands EVER issued by the South African Mint! The privy mark is a rhinoceros that’s clearly visible just above the springbok depicted on the coin’s reverse. It’s the perfect addition to tie this Silver Krugerrand with the Big 5 release since the rhino is the third release in the second Big 5 series—the Big Five II—that debuted in 2021. The traditional portrait of former South African President Paul Kruger appears on the obverse.
Each 2022 South Africa Silver Big 5 Privy Mark Krugerrand is struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. The product of multiple strikes and innovative laser-etching technology, the result is a pristine coin that shines with mirror-like surfaces and distinct, razor-sharp details! In fact, each coin available here has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) in perfect Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70UC) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has certified that these proofs are First Day of Issue (FDI) coins, a designation that means they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date.
