The world-famous Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) introduced the beautiful Walter Ott-designed Maple Leaf coin in 1979. That popular and iconic design remained unchanged until 2022, when it was re-sculpted in Ultra-High Relief (UHR) by former RCM Senior Engraver Susan Taylor. Because she had worked closely with Ott during his tenure at the Mint, Taylor was deemed the only person officials at RCM felt had the skill and experience to master this momentous task.

In 2024 for the third year of Canada’s Ultra High Relief Maple Leaf series, the one-ounce silver coin has elevated Taylor’s design into a new dimension with a technologically advanced striking method that creates a unique “pulsating” field. Here’s how it works: Hundreds of micro-engineered, precision-engraved, sub-millimeter-scale surfaces have been struck into the fields of this coin in such a manner that the boreal forests of Canada seem to rise from their surfaces as the coin is rotated. The Forest Field is repeated on both sides of the coin, further incorporating the very forests that make up so much of Canada’s landscape into the coin’s design!

Struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.99% silver, these $20 legal-tender Canadian coins boast incredible Ultra High Relief detail that stands 1.4 mm above the surface of the coin giving it the appearance of being three-dimensional. What’s more, they were also struck as Reverse Proof coins. Reverse Proofs have mirror-like details rising over beautifully frosted fields. It’s an especially breathtaking effect when used in combination with the coin’s dramatic relief.

First Day of Issue

Each 2024 Canada $20 One-Ounce Silver Maple Leaf Ultra High Relief Pulsating Forest Reverse Proof available here has also been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless perfect Proof-70 (PF70) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs will have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has certified that these Maple Leaves are First Day of Issue (FDI) coins, a designation that means they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date. Each coin will also come sonically sealed in a museum-quality acrylic holder and encapsulated with a label personally signed by its designer, Susan Taylor, the former Senior Engraver at the Royal Canadian Mint. Taylor worked at The Mint from 1981 until her retirement in 2017 and won the American Medal of the Year Award in 2016.
